Replacing a toilet seat is a straightforward DIY project that requires basic tools and a few simple steps. The process involves measuring for a new seat, removing the old one, and installing the replacement.
What you'll need
New toilet seat: Make sure it's the correct shape and size (round or elongated) for your toilet.
Tools:
Flathead screwdriver
Pliers or adjustable spanner/wrench
Protective gloves
A tape measure (if you haven't bought a new seat yet)
Cleaning supplies: Disinfectant spray and paper towels.
Step 1: Measure for a new toilet seat
Measure the old seat before you remove it to ensure your new one is a perfect fit.
Length: Measure from the center of the bolt holes to the front of the toilet bowl.
Width: Measure across the bowl at its widest point.
Shape: Check if your toilet is round or elongated. A round bowl is typically about 16.5 inches long, while an elongated bowl is about 18.5 inches long.
Step 2: Remove the old toilet seat
Locate the fittings. At the back of the seat, where it meets the toilet, you will see two hinge fittings. On many seats, the bolts are hidden under plastic caps.
Pry off the caps. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pop off these protective caps.
Unscrew the bolts. Look underneath the toilet bowl, and you will see the nuts that secure the bolts. Use pliers or an adjustable wrench to hold the nuts in place while you use your screwdriver to turn the bolts from the top.
Lift the seat off. Once the nuts are off, you can simply lift the entire old seat and hinges away from the toilet.
Step 3: Clean the area
Before installing the new seat, thoroughly clean and disinfect the area around the bolt holes, which is often a hard-to-reach spot.
Step 4: Install the new seat
Read the instructions. Familiarize yourself with the manufacturer's directions, as fitting systems can vary. Some modern seats have "top-fixing" bolts that tighten from above.
Assemble the new fittings. The new seat will come with fresh bolts, nuts, and any necessary washers.
Insert the bolts. Drop the new bolts through the holes on your toilet, from the top.
Hand-tighten the nuts. Place the nuts and washers (if included) onto the bolts from underneath the toilet. Finger-tighten them for now so you can make adjustments.
Align the seat. Position the new seat so that it is centered and sits evenly on the bowl.
Fully tighten the fittings. Hold the nuts in place and use a screwdriver to tighten the bolts completely. If you are using plastic fittings, be careful not to overtighten and crack them.
Snap on the bolt caps. If your new seat has protective caps, push them down over the bolts to finish.
